Painting
Painting is among the most ancient of human expressions. Even in the face of contemporary technology, it remains vital, pluralistic, and integral to our cultural identity. The study of painting within a liberal arts curriculum prepares you to engage the world with empathy, insight, individuality, and problem-solving skills.
The Marywood painting track’s diverse faculty of working artists ensures personal attention to identify and cultivate your particular interests and strengths. You will gain expertise and knowledge that will help you navigate the intricacies and opportunities of the profession, and the world at large.
Our Painting students have been accepted into highly competitive MFA painting programs including: Parsons School of Design, Pratt Institute, Maryland Institute College of Art, New York Studio School, Boston University, and Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. Students with a Painting Minor have developed strong portfolios that helped gain acceptance into prestigious graduate professional programs.
Foundation and intermediate courses are designed to develop your perceptual and technical abilities. Classes focus on composition and color through direct observation of still life, landscape, and the figure. Later, you're encouraged to engage in a more personal exploration of the possibilities of painting, driven by your own affinities and imagination.
At the advanced level, faculty-to-student interaction is primarily one-on-one as you develop a more focused visual vocabulary. Painting track students and painting minors work in semi-private partitioned studios, and studio work is supported by regular group critiques and periodic faculty reviews. Frequent trips to galleries and museums in New York City, and an ongoing program of distinguished visiting artists foster an active dialogue with contemporary and historical art.

Painting students are encouraged to apply for a semester of study abroad at Studio Art Centers International (SACI) in Florence, Italy.
