Joseph F. Hunt,’17 (MBA ’18), a recent alumnus of the University, began working soon after graduation for Sobel & Co., LLC, Livingston, N.J., where he also interned as a student. In his role as an auditor for non-profit organizations, he helps service organizations continue the work they do for the communities they serve.
“Helping others has always been my main focus. When I realized I could combine my passion with my education, I knew it was a path I could make my career,” Joe said.
Service became a part of Joe’s college experience during his freshman year, when he saw a need to provide services to young baseball players through a baseball clinic while at the same time donating the clinic’s proceeds to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
As an undergraduate, Joe was a member of The Good Samaritans, a ministry at Holy Family for his cohort of Maxis-Gillet Scholars. He also served as a mentor to new freshmen service scholars, was a member of Catholic Relief Services; was a new student orientation leader; was an admissions ambassador; a student member of the search committee for Marywood’s 12th president, and was a member of the men’s baseball and golf teams. Academically, he was consistently named to the dean’s list each semester.
Joe earned the Sister St. Agnes Medal for Excellence in Business at both the 2017 and 2018 commencement ceremonies at Marywood University. He earned a bachelor of business administration degree in accounting and financial planning in 2017 and received a master of business administration degree with a concentration in finance from Marywood in 2018.
An internship played an important role for Joe, based on his career path. He interned at Sobel & Co., LLC during the 2017 and 2018 summers, which gave him the foundation and networking experience he needed to begin his career with the company and to know that he had chosen the right path.
“Internships, at the very least, tell you what you want and don’t want to do. They are a huge learning tool to get to know what you don’t want to do, so you can discover the field of work that you can be passionate about.” Unaware that auditing for non-profits was a career path, Joe was able to find his purpose through his internship with Sobel & Co., LLC.
As a new member of the Alumni Association Board at Marywood University, Joe is passionate about connecting current students and alumni and about promoting the value of internships to both students and other alumni of the University who want to serve as mentors to students.
“For myself, I know that I want to be a mentor to current students. I know that there are other alumni who would also like to reach out and help current students and new alumni. I look forward to further growing the alumni/student mentorships as a member of the Alumni Association Board at Marywood University,” Joe said.
