Administrators, faculty, staff, and community members honored those who are serving or who have served our country on Friday, November 9, 2018 at the University’s Office of Military and Veteran Services. Surrounded by nearly 7,000 flags in Tree Stadium, Marywood trumpeter Trevor Sablan played TAPS; administrators and student veterans addressed the community; and Tom Tice from Warrior Strong spoke about the opportunities available to our servicemen and women upon returning home from service.
Christopher Smith, director of the Office of Military and Veteran Services, along with (Ret.) Colonel Lorraine T. Rupp Breen and her husband (Ret.) Colonel Richard Henley Breen, Jr., placed a flag for the most recently deceased veteran of war, Major Brent Taylor. Major Taylor was the mayor of North Ogden, UT, and a member of the Army National Guard.
Following the Veterans Day ceremony, members of the community gathered in Marywood University’s Veterans Resource Center for refreshments. At 2 p.m., Warrior Strong provided a free yoga class for veterans and dependents. The class was also available to non-military community members as a donation-based session.
The Veterans Day Events concluded at 9 p.m. with a candlelight vigil, at the newly lit Field of Flags. Christopher Smith said, “This year, lighting has been added to the Field of Flags. We knew we wanted to implement lighting to the flags this year, especially since the United States flag should always be lit at night.”
