The lecture will take place on Wednesday, October 14, 2020, from 10 a.m. – Noon. This virtual event is free and open to students, faculty, and staff of higher education institutions. Dr. Longazel’s recent book, Undocumented Fears: Immigration and the Politics of Divide and Conquer in Hazleton, Pennsylvania (2016), won the North Central Sociological Association’s 2017 Scholarly Achievement Award. He is also the co-editor of the forthcoming book, Migration and Mortality: Social Death, Dispossession, and Survival in the Americas (2021), and the co-founder of Anthracite Unite, a working class collective advocating for racial and economic justice in Northeast Pennsylvania.

Topics that will be adddressed at the “Immigration and Social Justice Issues” lecture include Hazleton’s controversial passage of the 2006 Illegal Immigration Relief Act (IIRA), as well as the region’s coalmining legacy more generally, to help people understand the current political moment—including harsh attacks against the Latinx community, stark divisions, and unprecedented levels of inequality.
