Fricchione Language Stimulation Group
Graduate students in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) are working with children who attend the Fricchione Early Learning Center for a weekly language stimulation group. This new practicum experience for CSD students involves stimulating the children's language development by reviewing over various language concepts through the use of themed materials and activities.
YMCA Hearing Screenings
Dr. Sheri Skrutski, Assistant Professor of Practice, and several first-year graduate students in the Speech-Language Pathology Master’s Degree Program provided hearing screenings to more than fifty preschool students at the Greater Scranton YMCA Early Learning Center - Dunmore.
Outreach Center for Community Resources
On Saturday, September 11, 2021 members of Marywood University's Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders attended the Outreach Center for Community Resources Career Day. Highlighting various aspects of the speech-language pathology and audiology professions such as AAC, phonetics, language, and hearing, Marywood students engaged participants in hands-on learning activities during the event.
Alzheimer's Walk 2018
Marywood Chapter volunteered at the 2 mile Walk to End Alzheimer's held at PNC Field on Saturday, October 6th. The walk raised $106,330.16 through the efforts of 854 participants. Money raised will provide funds for Alzheimer's care, support, and research.
Margaret Briggs Foundation Grant
The Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic was also awarded a grant from the Margaret Briggs Foundation for $6476. Monies will be used to conduct language stimulation groups at Head Start Centers in Lackawanna County. Language stimulation sessions will be designed to stimulate speech and language skills for preschool children ages 3-5 in a fun learning environment, which also will involve increased interaction with their peers to further assist with pragmatic development. Head Start teachers will be trained on how to incorporate similar activities into the classroom setting to stimulate language skills throughout the academic year.

Starkey Foundation Grant
Marywood University’s Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic was awarded a grant from the Starkey Foundation for $6605. An estimated 350 youngsters will be screened in the coming year, and participants identified with hearing loss and/or speech-language delays will be referred for early intervention. In addition to the screenings, Head Start teachers will be trained to recognize speech, language and hearing delays.
Ronald McDonald House Wish List
The Speech and Hearing Club is an affiliation of the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSHLA), a professional membership association for students enrolled in a communication sciences program or related majors. Over the past two years club members raised funds via Cold Stone Creamery and Ruby Tuesdays nights. Funds collected have been used to purchase $450 worth of items from the Ronald McDonald House Wish List and include such items as kitchen, laundry, and guest helpers (e.g., Clorox wipes, paper towels, dish detergent, laundry detergent, shampoo, toothpaste, etc.) as well as DVDs and toys for children staying with family at the Ronald McDonald House or utilizing the Ronald McDonald House Family Rooms
Community Service Grant
The Marywood University Chapter of the National Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association (NSSLHA) was pleased to have been awarded a $700.00 Community Service Grant from the NSSLHA Executive Council in the fall of 2009. Grant money received was used to support an educational project for the Scranton Lackawanna Human Development Agency (SLHDA) - Head Start. A matching donation of $700.00 was funded by money raised by the Marywood University NSSLHA Chapter. NSSLHA members helped to raise money by sponsoring a clothing sale and a "Night at Cold Stone Creamery". All money raised and NSSLHA's matching gift, for a total of $1400, was used to purchase educational materials for approximately 10 Head Start centers in Lackawanna County. Materials were presented to Head Start representatives at the North Scranton II location in December 2009 by NSSLHA Chapter Officers. Head Start Project
CSD undergraduate and graduate students recently took part in a community service project for Head Start, a regional agency supporting education for underserved children. Our CSD students completed hundreds of speech-language and hearing screenings for the children enrolled at the centers.
Bone Marrow Drive in Memory of David Lavelle
CSD students volunteered their time to help with a bone marrow drive on the Marywood University. The students took DNA samples from volunteer donors for submission to the national marrow registry, assisting the donor's with registration and documentation.
Christmas Giving Tree
Marywood University's Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders along with its student chapter of the National Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association collected gifts in December to support Campus Ministry's Christmas Giving Tree project. Gifts were donated to the United Neighborhood Association, Friends of the Poor, St. Anthony's Haven, Community Intervention Center and Holy Family Residence.
The Blue Ribbon Foundation Grant
The Blue Ribbon Foundation approved a $12,589 grant to Marywood University’s Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic for the program. An estimated 350 youngsters will be screened in the coming year, and participants identified with hearing loss and/or speech-language delays will be referred for early intervention. In addition to the screenings, 15 Head Start teachers will be trained to recognize speech, language and hearing delays and learn how to incorporate exercises into classroom activities to stimulate speech-language skills thanks to this Blue Ribbon grant.
