Secondary Math Teacher, Blue Ridge School District
I am currently a secondary mathematics teacher in the Blue Ridge School District. Attending Marywood University for my Mathematics/Secondary Education degree was an excellent decision. The friendships formed, as well as the small class size and personal attention, enriched my learning and made for a memorable four years!”
What is your current employment?
I am a secondary mathematics teacher in the Blue Ridge School District. After graduating from Marywood University, I substituted for a year, during which I had a long-term substitute position. I was then hired for my first full-time teaching position in August 2014. I also recently began graduate level classes to work toward my master’s degree.
How did your math education at Marywood prepare you for your current job?
My mathematics education at Marywood is an essential piece of my job each day. Without the strong foundation of mathematical concepts that I gained from my classes at Marywood, I would not be able to walk confidently into the classroom and instruct the lesson of the day. I am not hesitant when students ask me questions because I know I have learned the answers from the professors I had as a college student. Furthermore, Marywood’s Mathematics Department helped me form a true appreciation for and interest in the greater study of mathematics, which fuels the passion that my students see each day.
What are your favorite memories as a math / math secondary education major at Marywood?
Some of my favorite memories as a Mathematics/Secondary Education major at Marywood University are from the conference trips that we took. We attended both the Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of Mathematics and National Council of Teachers of Mathematics conferences in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and Hartford, Connecticut. Both trips were memorable and fun experiences with the fellow mathematics majors and professors.
I also think back to our countless hours of study sessions as some of my favorite memories. Forming such a close group of friends in the Mathematics Department made every study group fun and productive. Even when studying for the hardest of tests, we somehow managed to end up laughing and enjoying our time together.
