The Marywood University Art Department DISTINGUISHED VISITING ARTIST LECTURE SERIES presents a lecture by New York painter FARRELL BRICKHOUSE on Monday, March 2 at 3:00 pm. This special event will take place in Multi-Media Room 160 in the Learning Resource Center at Marywood, and will be followed by a reception in the Visual Arts Center. The lecture and reception are free and open to the public.

Farrell Brickhouse creates eccentric thickly encrusted oil paintings that convey cryptic personal imagery and narratives. He states that, “One of art’s chief functions is to resist the denaturing forces that are always present; those things that would take away our transcendent possibilities and turn us into stereotyped beings. Art is not the production of meaning but the providing of a genuine experience of what it is to be alive and in the world.”

Brickhouse’s work is included in numerous important public and private collections including the Wadsworth Atheneum, San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art, and the De Menil Collection. He is the recipient of grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. He has been on the art faculty at School of Visual Arts in New York since 1980.

The Marywood University Art Department takes great pleasure in hosting this lecture in which Mr. Brickhouse will show images of his work and speak about his life, ideas and working process. Audience members will have an opportunity to meet the artist at the reception immediately following the lecture. This event is sponsored by the Marywood University Cultural Affairs Committee.
