Distinguished Visiting Artist Lecture Series
The Marywood University Department of Visual Arts DISTINGUISHED VISITING ARTIST LECTURE SERIES presents a lecture by New York painter GLENN GOLDBERG on Thursday November 10 at 3:30 pm. This special event will take place in the Comerford Theater at Marywood, and will be followed by a reception in the Shields Visual Arts Center.
The lecture and reception are free and open to the public.
Glenn Goldberg’s paintings feature images of dogs, birds, or ducks, woven seamlessly into layered ornamental landscapes rich in geometric detail. Decorative arts, rugs, banners, tapestries, Danish modern furniture, fetish figures, as well as ancient calligraphy are among Goldberg’s sources of inspiration, providing his work with a sense of varied cultural eclecticism. Goldberg’s compositions, consciously devoid of a narrative context, allow for the discovery of layered visual references ranging from the decorative arts to childhood imagination. The works are charged with a web of multiple dotted lines that delineate the space in rhythmic waves. The embrace of handmade imperfections continues to play an important role in this body of work.
Mr. Goldberg holds an MFA from Queens College, where he also presently teaches. His work is in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the National Academy of Arts and Letters in New York; the High Museum of Art, Atlanta; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City; the Rose Art Museum Waltham, MA; and West Virginia University Art Collection, among others. He has been awarded numerous grants including a Guggenheim Fellowship, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, and an Edward Albee Foundation Grant.
The Marywood University Department of Visual Arts takes great pleasure in hosting this important and valuable lecture. Audience members will have an opportunity to meet the artist at the reception immediately following the lecture.
