The Marywood University Art Department DISTINGUISHED VISITING ARTIST LECTURE SERIES presents a lecture by New York painter/sculptor JAMES BIEDERMAN on Wednesday October 4 at 4:00 pm. This special event will take place in Comerford Theater in the Science Center at Marywood, and will be followed by a reception in the Shields Visual Arts Center. The lecture and reception are free and open to the public.

Working in both painting and sculpture, James Biederman creates complex, richly layered surfaces and structures that are activated by color, gesture, and surprising contrasts. During his forty year career, Beiderman has become known both for his talent and for his uncompromising devotion to his art and community, demonstrated through his teaching and through the exhibitions he mounted for fellow painters at N3 Project Space, which he founded in 1998 in Brooklyn.

Mr. Biederman holds an MFA from Yale University, and attended the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program. His work is held in numerous important collections including The Metropolitan Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, as well as in the Maslow Collection at Marywood University. He has been awarded prestigious grants from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Joan Mitchell Foundation, the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, and many others.

The Marywood University Art Department takes great pleasure in hosting this important and valuable lecture. Audience members will have an opportunity to meet the artist at the reception immediately following the lecture.

The Maslow Study Gallery will feature a selection of works by the artist from the Maslow Collection.
