Distinguished Visiting Artist Lecture Series

Matt Phillips

The Marywood University Art Department DISTINGUISHED VISITING ARTIST LECTURE SERIES presents a lecture by New York painter MATT PHILLIPS on Wednesday October 24 at 4:00 pm.

This special event will take place in the Insalaco Studio Arts Center room 106 at Marywood, and will be followed by a reception in the Kresge Gallery. The lecture and reception are free and open to the public.

Matt Phillips’s softly-colored abstract compositions draw inspiration from a range of sources, including maps, quilts, and architectural forms, and develop organically as he moves across the canvas. Using his self-created water-based paint, Phillips melds the boundaries between color and canvas, as the paint absorbs deeply into the canvas, uniting image, medium and surface.

Mr. Phillips holds an MFA in painting from Boston University. His work has been featured in more than eighty exhibitions in the US and abroad, including recent one-person shows at Steven Harvey Fine Art Projects in New York, and Studio d'Arte Raffaelli in Trento, Italy. He has been awarded prestigious residencies at the Yaddo Colony in Saratoga Springs, and the McDowell Colony in New Hampshire. He has been Guest Lecturer at the Jewish Museum in New York, and Visiting Artist at Smith College, Amherst College, Swarthmore College, and Rhode Island School of Design, among others.

The Marywood University Art Department takes great pleasure in hosting this important and valuable lecture. Audience members will have an opportunity to meet the artist at the reception immediately following the lecture.
