Study Abroad Experiences
“I learned how to deal with struggles on my own. It taught me how to adjust to a completely foreign environment with new people, things, and ideas. I learned how to learn from them and they learned from me. It opened up my eyes a lot, to say the least.”
Sara G. (James Cook Univ. Australia 2012)The Study Abroad Office is part of the Center for Global Engagement Department at Marywood. Study abroad experiences can be tailored to individual comfort levels so students get exactly what they want from the experience. The amount of time spent overseas could range from a week during Spring Break, a few weeks in the summer to an entire semester. Students can choose to live with host families, among foreign students, or surrounded by other Americans. A number of programs are offered and scholarships and financial aid are also available.
You can study abroad in countries throughout the world—Programs vary in structure from exchanges and individually arranged programs to faculty-led programs.
According to a recent article in The Atlantic magazine: "Writers and thinkers have long felt the creative benefits of international travel. Ernest Hemingway, for example, drew inspiration for much of his work from his time in Spain and France. Aldous Huxley, the author of Brave New World, moved from the U.K. to the U.S. in his 40s to branch out into screenwriting. Mark Twain, who sailed around the coast of the Mediterranean in 1869, wrote in his travelogue Innocents Abroad that travel is 'fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness.'"
Marywood students who have studied abroad come back marveling at their experiences. They report that besides seeing wonderful new places, meeting many interesting people, and experiencing very different cultures, they have grown in their interpersonal skills related to communication, creativity, problem solving and independence.
