Religion plays a prominent role in world events today and an increasing variety of religions are represented in the United States. A rich and accurate understanding of religion prepares one to be a responsible citizen in this diverse and interdependent world. Professionals in the fields of journalism, social work, healthcare, business, public safety, and counseling are recognizing the need to have a better understanding of the many religions represented among the people they encounter. The emphasis of the minor is on breadth and inter-religious competency.
The minor requires six courses (18 credits) distributed as follows:
- RST 112 Modern Belief
- RST 217 Introduction to Eastern Religions
- One course that includes Islam and Judaism or two courses that cover these topics
- One course in Christian Theology, e.g.
- RST 219 Contemporary Protestantism
- RST 201 Introduction to the Bible
- RST 214 Church Today
- One course that examines a theme or issue across multiple traditions, e.g.
- RST 234 Women and Religion
- RST 235 Death and Afterlife
- RST 230 Political and Liberation Theologies
- RST 250B Health and Healing in the World’s Spiritual Traditions
- RST 240 Spirit and Nature: Religious Dimensions of the Environment
With the approval of the minor advisor in the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, students may count toward the minor one course take in another department.
