Sustainability: Mine Reclamation

From Minefield to Dreamfield

Marywood recently reclaimed 40 acres of mine-scarred land in a previously unused portion of campus. The site represents a third of Marywood's 115-acre campus.

This reclamation project was made possible by a grant from the Pennsylvania Bureau of Abandoned Mine Reclamation.

The site is now home to a new $2.2 million multi-purpose athletic field. The 97,000 square foot synthetic-turf field boasts a state-of-the-art lighting and sound system and a lightning warning system. The field is used by Marywood's lacrosse, soccer, and field hockey teams.

Land Design Project

A portion of the reclaimed land is being reserved for an innovative public-use project. Internationally-acclaimed environmental artist Patricia Johanson is designing a park to honor the land’s natural and cultural history.
